SIP trunk — Session Initiation Protocol trunk
Nedir SIP trunk?
Bu terim şu anda yalnızca İngilizce olarak sunulmaktadır.
A SIP trunk is one named connection from your PBX (on-premise or cloud) to Orbit's voice edge — the path calls take to reach the public telephone network over SIP signaling and RTP media instead of physical phone lines. Each trunk authenticates by SIP registration (username/password) or by IP allow-listing and carries a configurable number of concurrent call channels. SIP trunking is the aggregate practice; a SIP trunk is the individual connection you configure, authenticate, and point your PBX at.
More detail
When you bring your own carrier (BYOC), you register a SIP trunk per carrier relationship and keep your existing numbers and rates while adopting Orbit's IVR, queues, and reporting layer. Capacity scales by configuration — you adjust the channel count on the trunk rather than ordering or retiring physical lines.
SIP carries the signaling only (the INVITE/ACK/BYE handshake that sets up and tears down the call); the audio itself rides RTP once the session is up. That is why a call that fails to connect points at the SIP path, while a call with poor audio points at the RTP path.

- How is a SIP trunk different from SIP trunking?
- SIP trunking is the practice of connecting a phone system to the public network over SIP; a SIP trunk is the individual provisioned connection inside that setup. You 'do SIP trunking' by registering SIP trunks — typically one per carrier or PBX leg.
- How does my PBX authenticate to a SIP trunk?
- Two options: SIP registration, where your PBX logs in with a username/password, or IP allow-listing, where the trunk accepts signaling only from your PBX's static addresses. Production setups often use both together.
