Customer data (CDPaaS)

Segment (CDP)

What is Segment (CDP)?

A segment is a dynamically defined group of customers who share one or more traits or behaviors — for example, 'opened the last three emails but hasn't purchased in 60 days' — used to target a campaign, trigger a message, or personalize an experience. Unlike a static list, a segment's membership recalculates automatically as customer data changes, so a customer can enter or leave a segment the moment their behavior or traits shift.

More detail

Segments are typically built from a combination of raw events, profile attributes, and computed traits, combined with logical operators (and, or, not) to define precisely who qualifies.

Because segment membership updates dynamically, a campaign built on a segment stays relevant over time without someone manually refreshing a static export or contact list.

Frequently asked

How is a segment different from a static contact list?
A static list is a fixed snapshot of contacts at the time it was created; a segment is a rule-based definition that recalculates membership automatically as customer data changes, so who's included can shift over time without manual updating.
What can a segment be built from?
A combination of raw event data, stored profile attributes, and computed traits, combined with logical conditions, so a segment can express something as specific as 'high lifetime value customers who haven't opened an email in 30 days.'
