What is PII?
PII (Personally Identifiable Information) is any data that can identify a specific individual, either on its own — a phone number, email address, full name, or government ID — or in combination with other data a business holds. For a CPaaS platform, contact records, message and call content, recordings, and delivery metadata routinely contain PII, which is why access controls, retention limits, and export/deletion tooling around that data are compliance requirements, not optional hardening.

PII spans a spectrum from directly identifying (a phone number, an email address, a national ID number) to indirectly identifying only when combined with other data (a birth date plus a ZIP code). Regulations like GDPR and most US state privacy laws treat both as protected personal data, not just the directly identifying kind.
A messaging or voice platform accumulates PII across many surfaces at once — contact fields, message bodies, call recordings and transcripts, and even IP addresses or device identifiers captured at signup — so a single customer's PII footprint is rarely confined to one table or one feature.
