Quick answer: A standalone media-mix-modeling vendor (Rockerbox, Northbeam, Triple Whale) and your omnichannel CPaaS answer different halves of the same question. The vendor fits a statistical model over spend and revenue data it ingests from your ad platforms and your commerce backend. The CPaaS originates the channel events themselves — SMS sends, voice calls, WhatsApp threads, DNI sessions — and those event streams are the ground truth any model regresses against. Devotel Orbit ships the attribution pieces (call tracking, dynamic number insertion, BI-connector export, and the Insights media-mix model) inside the same tenant that owns the events, so the modeling doesn't depend on a third party re-hydrating your funnel. This post separates MMM from click-attribution and MTA, decomposes the shipped attribution surfaces, walks a retail worked example end to end, and names where pure-play vendors still vary.
MMM vs click-attribution vs MTA — three different questions
Three techniques share the word "attribution" and answer three different questions:
- Media-mix modeling (MMM) regresses aggregate spend against aggregate revenue over time. It answers "how should I split budget across channels?" and needs no per-user tracking — the input is a daily spend/revenue panel. Privacy-era measurement gaps that break cookie-based models leave MMM standing.
- Click attribution (usually last-click) credits the final tracked touchpoint before conversion. It answers "which touchpoint gets credit in this funnel?" and collapses whenever the deciding touch is a phone call, an SMS thread, or a store visit rather than a click.
- Multi-touch attribution (MTA) distributes credit across every tracked touchpoint with a chosen weighting. It answers "how do touches split credit?" but still requires the touches to be observable — MTA on incomplete event coverage is precise arithmetic on biased inputs.
Sister post Media-Mix Modeling for Messaging Channels covers why outbound channels need channel-level modeling in the first place. This one compares where that modeling lives: in a separate vendor, or on the platform that already produces the events.
Decomposing the shipped attribution pieces on Orbit
Attribution on an omnichannel CPaaS is not one product — it is four composable surfaces a tenant turns on independently:
- Call tracking and number attribution — every purchased number and tracking pool reports inbound calls with source, duration, recording, and outcome, so "paid search ad → phone order" stops being invisible. See Call Tracking and Attribution on Your Numbers.
- Dynamic number insertion (DNI) — a script on your site swaps displayed numbers per visitor/session so organic, paid, and referral traffic each reach a distinct tracking number; a click becomes a pre-call identifier rather than a guess. The DNI explainer covers pool sizing and hygiene.
- Analytics export via BI connectors — the event streams above replicate to your warehouse (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift) on a schedule you control, so a finance or data team joins them to revenue without a vendor middleman. The BI-connector export guide lists the exported tables.
- The Insights media-mix model — configured inside the tenant (Insights > Media mix model,
/insights/media-mix-model): you pick the revenue event, the date range, the channel/spend/revenue properties, and the adstock carryover; the run returns fit (R²), per-channel contribution, ROI, response curves, and a recommended daily budget split.
These are tenant-owned controls — the events, the export, and the model configuration all live in your Orbit workspace; nothing external touches the data.
A retail worked example: paid search, paid social, and one SMS follow-up
Picture a Shopify-backed retailer running Google Ads and Meta ads into a weekly SMS promotion, aiming to read channel ROI for the month.
- Instrument clicks with DNI. Paid-search visitors see tracking number A, paid-social visitors see tracking number B from the pool, direct/organic keep the static number C. Every inbound call now carries a source tag even before the conversation starts.
- Send the SMS follow-up from the same tenant. The Promo-send and delivery events join calls and web sessions on a shared channel vocabulary (
google, meta, sms, organic), so the model input needs no renaming map. - Export, then model. Schedule the BI connector to publish daily spend plus
Order Completedrevenue to the warehouse; or run the Insights media-mix model directly on the CDP revenue event with defaultschannel, cost, valueand whatever adstock decay fits the buying cycle. - Read the output. The channel table returns contribution in dollars, share of attributed revenue, ROI multiple, the response curve, and a recommended daily allocation — for example, shift budget from paid social into SMS until the social response curve flattens at your current spend, then re-run after the next window.
If a call converts by phone, the DNI tag credits the right paid channel; if the last step is a reply to the SMS push, the sentence "last-click" never enters the conversation.
Ship-to-shop: the click-to-WhatsApp entry point
Meta's click-to-WhatsApp ads are outbound from your brand but inbound to the WhatsApp channel, and the thread lands in the same Orbit conversation stream your attribution surfaces read. The Click-to-WhatsApp entry-point explainer shows the ad → pre-filled message → conversation → conversion path. Because the event arrives as a first-party channel event (not a Meta-only click export), the same BI-connector schedule carries it to the warehouse and the same model run prices it against paid-search and SMS with one vocabulary — no extra connector per vendor for each new channel Meta adds.
Honest fit: where pure-play MMM vendors still vary
Where a third-party vendor can still earn its fee — be honest about the boundaries:
- Portfolio-scale offline media. TV, radio, print, and sponsorship spend with modeled (not measured) effects: Rockerbox and algorithmic-MMM consultancies bring years of priors and tuned transformations for hard-to-measure channels. A CPaaS model panel covers what you can instrument.
- Cross-company data co-ops. Some vendors normalize cohort and competitor benchmarks against their own customer base; a first-party platform reads only your tenant.
- No warehouse yet. Northbeam and Triple Whale bundle hosted storage plus dashboards; if you have no BI target and no data team, a packaged vendor is one step shorter than "stand up BigQuery + connector."
- Non-CPaaS channels in scope. If paid video impressions and linear-TV spots dominate spend, the incremental value is the vendor's priors, not your SMS/voice events.
If your measurable spend lives in SMS, voice, WhatsApp, and email — and conversions close through calls, replies, and commerce events — running modeling next to the events beats piping the same events to a second platform and paying by the ingestion row.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Orbit media-mix model replace MMM-vendor consulting?
No. It replaces the plumbing and the recurring ingestion bill for CPaaS-sourced channels. For offline-media priors and external benchmarks, a vendor with a consulting arm still adds what a per-tenant model cannot.
Can I export events to my own Rockerbox/Northbeam subscription?
Yes. The BI-connector export publishes the same tables to your warehouse, and most vendors ingest from BigQuery or Snowflake. Running the export yourself keeps the vendor optional rather than the sole pipeline.
How is this different from last-click in GA4?
GA4's attribution views cover web touches. Orbit's surfaces cover originating channel events — SMS sends, voice calls, WhatsApp threads, DNI-tagged sessions — so the inputs include the calls and replies a click stream cannot see.
Which revenue events can the model regress against?
Any CDP event carrying a numeric value property — for example, Order Completed. The model run configuration lets you re-point the property names if your schema differs.
