RCS — Rich Communication Services

What is RCS?

RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the GSMA carrier standard that upgrades SMS with read receipts, typing indicators, high-resolution media, suggested replies, and a verified sender name and logo — while still landing in the phone's native messaging app rather than a separate app like WhatsApp. RCS Business Messaging lets a verified brand send these richer messages to Android, and a growing set of iOS, users through their default texting app.

More detail

Because RCS rides the carrier messaging network (not an over-the-top app), delivery still depends on the recipient's device and carrier supporting RCS and the conversation falling back to plain SMS when they do not — so a well-built RCS integration always has an SMS fallback.

Verified RCS senders display a checkmark, brand name, and logo in the conversation, which is the main trust signal that differentiates a legitimate business message from spam.

Frequently asked

Does RCS require a separate app like WhatsApp does?
No. RCS messages appear in the recipient's default messaging app — the same app they already use for SMS — rather than requiring them to install a separate business messaging app.
What happens if a recipient's phone doesn't support RCS?
The message falls back to standard SMS or MMS automatically, so the recipient still receives it — just without the rich media, read receipts, and verified branding.
