BYOC — Bring your own carrier

What is BYOC?

BYOC (bring your own carrier) is the arrangement where a company keeps its own telecom carrier — and the rates, numbers, and routing agreements that come with it — while using a communications platform for the application layer: IVR, call queues, messaging flows, and reporting. The platform connects to the customer's existing carrier over SIP or SMPP instead of replacing it entirely, so the company keeps the carrier relationship it already has.

More detail

BYOC rides on standard interconnection protocols: SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) trunks for voice and SMPP (Short Message Peer-to-Peer) binds for SMS. Provisioning a BYOC route means exchanging credentials — a SIP registration or IP allow-list, or SMPP host, system ID, and password — rather than porting traffic onto the platform's own carrier pool.

A full BYOC setup is split between inbound and outbound. An inbound SIP trunk brings calls to the platform from the existing carrier; outbound termination over the customer's own carrier credential is an operator-level routing option on top of the platform's default route.

Because the customer's own carrier agreement carries the traffic, BYOC matters most to operators and large enterprises that have already negotiated their own carrier rates, or that need to keep an existing carrier for regulatory reasons, while still using the platform's programmable voice and messaging layer.

Frequently asked

What does BYOC stand for?
BYOC stands for “bring your own carrier” — a company plugs its existing telecom carrier into a communications platform over SIP or SMPP and uses the platform for the application features, while the carrier relationship, numbers, and rates stay with the company.
Why would a company bring its own carrier instead of using the platform's route?
Usually to keep carrier rates it has already negotiated directly, or to satisfy a regulatory requirement to use a specific carrier, while still using the platform's IVR, queues, messaging flows, and reporting.
