The network edge is the boundary where a private or local network interfaces with the public Internet — the point where traffic crosses from infrastructure you control onto infrastructure you don't. In VoIP, it's where an SBC (Session Border Controller) sits to secure, normalize, and police SIP signaling and media as calls pass between a business network and a carrier, and where NAT traversal happens so real-time media can route reliably.

Every call, message, or packet eventually crosses a network edge: inside your own network you control routing, addressing, and security policy; past the edge, another operator's network takes over and your traffic competes with everyone else's. The edge is therefore the natural place to enforce encryption, rate limiting, and fraud screening before traffic enters or leaves.
On a hosted CPaaS like Orbit, the edge functions — SIP normalization, SRTP/TLS encryption, toll-fraud screening, and NAT traversal — are handled inside the platform rather than on an appliance the customer has to buy. A business connects its phones or app to the platform, and the platform's own edge equipment handles the hop onto carrier networks and the public Internet.

- The network edge is a location — the boundary between two networks — not a specific device. A softswitch is the software that makes call-routing decisions; an SBC is the element that typically sits at the edge to secure and normalize SIP traffic. Many deployments run an SBC at the edge in front of the softswitch behind it.
- Why does real-time voice care about where the edge is?
- Because NAT breaks the addresses embedded in SIP and WebRTC signaling, the edge is where endpoints discover a reachable public address (STUN/TURN/ICE) or where an SBC performs carrier-grade NAT traversal. Placing that function at the boundary is what lets two-way media flow reliably in and out.
