Answering machine detection (AMD) is the technology an outbound dialer uses to distinguish, within the first second or two of a connected call, whether a human answered live or the call reached voicemail or an answering machine — so the system can route the call appropriately, such as connecting a live human immediately to an agent while leaving a pre-recorded message on voicemail. AMD accuracy is never perfect, and misclassifications are an inherent tradeoff of detecting this within a very short window.

AMD typically analyzes the greeting's audio pattern — length, pauses, tone — within the first second or two of the call being answered, which is why detection isn't instantaneous or perfectly accurate.
A predictive dialer relies heavily on AMD to avoid connecting an agent to a voicemail greeting, since agent time spent on a machine-answered call is pure lost productivity.
