Group messaging is a text conversation shared among three or more phone numbers, where every member receives each message in the thread. SMS and MMS deliver it as a fan-out copy to each participant rather than a joint session; in app-to-app channels rich clients keep one conversation object, and a replying human inbox routes the same thread back to every member.

On the carriers, group SMS/MMS is a fan-out: the sending platform queues one copy addressed to several numbers and returns a delivery receipt per recipient, so membership in the group is a naming convenience rather than a single message object. A common business pattern for group messaging is the staff or shift roster: a dispatcher or team lead starts a thread, every member sees every reply, and a replying inbox can route the conversation back to each recipient.
