Sender-ID registration
Qué es Sender-ID registration?
Esta entrada está disponible actualmente solo en inglés.
Sender-ID registration is the per-country approval process for an alphanumeric sender ID — the short brand name shown as the 'from' on an SMS instead of a phone number. Many countries require the sender ID to be registered with the local regulator or carriers before traffic using it is delivered, and some block unregistered alphanumeric senders outright. Registration is granted per country with regulator lead times from days to weeks, not per send.
More detail
The format itself is bounded: 3–11 characters of letters, digits, spaces, hyphens, and underscores. The 11-character ceiling is the GSM 7-bit hard limit, while the 3-character floor is regulatory — authorities such as ANATEL (Brazil), OFCOM (UK), AGCOM (Italy), and BTRC (Bangladesh) reject shorter IDs — so a compliant submission checks both before anything is filed.
The duty varies by destination. Some markets accept alphanumeric sender IDs only after registration, others only after supporting KYC documents are attached, and others block them entirely; a platform records each country's approval status and gates send-time traffic so routing honors the approvals actually granted. Orbit's per-country reference (`GET /compliance/country-rules`) tells you which sender types a market accepts, whether registration is required, and which documents to supply before the first send.
Registering a sender ID files it into the compliance workflow; final approval is granted by the regulator or carrier in each country, not instantly by the platform. Plan lead time accordingly — send-time gates keep traffic off destinations where the ID is not yet approved.
Preguntas frecuentes
- Do all countries require sender-ID registration?
- No. Requirements are set country by country: some block unregistered alphanumeric senders entirely, some accept them freely, and some don't accept alphanumeric sender IDs at all (long codes or short codes instead). Check the country's rule row before planning traffic to a new market.
- How is a sender-ID registration different from 10DLC registration?
- 10DLC registration is the US/Canada program for standard 10-digit long-code numbers (brand plus campaign). Sender-ID registration is the per-country approval of an alphanumeric brand name shown in place of a number — a different mechanism, used in most of the world outside North America.
