Email deliverability

BIMI — Brand Indicators for Message Identification

Qu'est-ce que BIMI?

Cette entrée n'est actuellement disponible qu'en anglais.

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) is an email standard that displays a brand's verified logo next to authenticated messages in supporting inbox clients such as Gmail, Apple Mail, and Yahoo Mail. BIMI builds on DMARC: a brand publishes a BIMI DNS record pointing at its logo only once the domain's DMARC policy is set to enforcement, so the logo acts as a visible marker that the domain's email authentication is genuinely configured.

More detail

A BIMI record is published as a TXT record at default._bimi for the sending domain and points at a brand logo hosted as an SVG Tiny PS file over HTTPS; for the logo to appear in Gmail, the record must also reference a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC), a certificate from a qualified authority tying the logo to a registered trademark.

Because BIMI only works on top of a DMARC policy set to quarantine or reject, a logo displayed through BIMI also tells recipients the domain actively rejects forged mail. That is why inbox clients treat BIMI as a trust signal rather than decoration: the visible brand presentation is earned by real authentication.

In Orbit, BIMI sits next to the existing SPF, DKIM, and DMARC checks on each sending domain's deliverability page: once the domain's DMARC policy reaches enforcement, a built-in setup wizard generates the BIMI record from the logo and certificate URLs and validates the record published at the domain's DNS.

Questions fréquentes

What does a brand need before its logo shows through BIMI?
A DMARC policy at quarantine or reject enforcement for the sending domain, a brand logo hosted publicly as an SVG Tiny PS file over HTTPS, and a BIMI DNS record pointing at that logo. Gmail additionally requires a Verified Mark Certificate referenced in the record, while Apple Mail and Yahoo Mail display the logo without one.
Does BIMI itself improve email deliverability?
Not directly — BIMI adds no authentication check of its own; it inherits everything from the DMARC enforcement it requires. The deliverability benefit comes from that enforced DMARC policy, while BIMI's own contribution is visibility: a consistent logo next to the sender name makes authenticated mail recognizable to recipients.
