Directory Assistance (411)

Qu'est-ce que Directory Assistance (411)?

Cette entrée n'est actuellement disponible qu'en anglais.

Directory assistance is the operator- or automated service that looks up a phone number, address, or listing for a caller — in the US reached by dialing the N11 code 411. The carrier routes the 411 call to a directory-assistance provider, which searches the listing database and speaks the result or connects the call, billing a per-call charge on the caller's phone bill. On a business phone system the term also covers the internal extension directory users dial by name.

More detail

411 is one of the reserved N11 codes in the North American Numbering Plan — the same family as 911 (emergency), 211 (community services), and 811 (call-before-you-dig). Because codes like 411 are reserved across every numbering area, a multi-location business phone system must pass N11 dialing through at every site rather than treating 411 as a normal seven-digit call.

On the carrier side, a 411 call is intercepted in the network and routed to the directory-assistance provider that has the listing agreement for that carrier — not to a normal geographic number. The provider charges per call (or bundles a monthly allowance), which is why business phone systems often route 411 to a hosted or partner information service instead of letting every handset hit a per-call retail rate.

Inside a company, 'directory assistance' usually means the internal name-dial directory — the dial-by-name menu an auto attendant or attendant console exposes — which draws from the organization's own extension list, not a public listing database. Keep the two senses distinct: public 411 lookups are a carrier-rated service, while internal dial-by-name is a UCaaS feature.

Questions fréquentes

Is dialing 411 free?
Usually not — most carriers charge a per-call directory-assistance fee, and the charge appears as a rated directory-assistance call on the phone bill. Some plans bundle an allowance; on a business phone system, routing 411 to a negotiated partner service is how the per-call rate gets controlled.
Does a VoIP or cloud phone system need to support 411 dialing?
Yes — 411 is a reserved N11 code in every numbering area, so a multi-line phone system is expected to pass it directly without a prefix, the same way Kari's Law requires direct 911 dialing. Systems that block or misroute 411 tend to get found out the first time a user needs a listing from a desk phone.
What's the difference between 411 directory assistance and a dial-by-name directory?
411 is the public, carrier-rated lookup service for outside listings; a dial-by-name directory is the internal auto-attendant feature that searches the company's own extensions by spoken or keyed name. Both get called 'directory assistance', but only the 411 sense bills per call.
How does directory assistance relate to a CIC or a carrier?
The carrier a 411 call lands on is determined by the subscriber's carrier assignment, not the CIC — a CIC (Carrier Identification Code) identifies which long-distance carrier carries interexchange traffic, while 411 routing follows the local carrier's directory-assistance arrangement. 411 is an N11 vertical service, not a carrier-selection code.
