NG911 (Next Generation 911)

Qu'est-ce que NG911 (Next Generation 911)?

Cette entrée n'est actuellement disponible qu'en anglais.

NG911 (Next Generation 911) is the IP-based emergency-call network replacing the legacy circuit-switched 911 system in the United States: an Emergency Services IP Network (ESInet) that carries 911 calls as SIP sessions, delivering the caller's validated location and, where supported, text, photos, or medical data alongside the voice path. Where legacy 911 pins a call to one fixed center over copper trunks, NG911 can reroute around a congested or failed center.

More detail

NG911 separates the call path from the answering point: a call enters the ESInet, a location-information service validates the caller's dispatchable location, and routing logic delivers the call and its data to the correct PSAP — or to a backup center when the primary one is down, which legacy trunks cannot do without manual rerouting.

The architecture comes from NENA (the US National Emergency Number Association), whose i3 standard defines the ESInet, the location-information services, and the data formats; Canadian and European emergency-network modernizations follow the same IP direction. Rollout is gradual — PSAPs connect county by county, so a business phone system today may hand a 911 call to either a legacy trunk or an IP-based ESInet depending on the destination.

On the business side the obligations are unchanged: Kari's Law (direct 911 dialing plus on-site notification) and RAY BAUM'S Act (dispatchable location with the call) still apply. NG911 is what lets that location travel as validated IP data end to end — which is why the per-phone registered address a VoIP system maintains is the exact record the NG911 handoff consumes.

Questions fréquentes

How is NG911 different from E911?
E911 is the capability that delivers the caller's callback number and location with a 911 call over the legacy network; NG911 replaces the legacy transport itself. Under NG911 the call and its location travel as standards-based SIP data through an ESInet, enabling automatic rerouting, backup centers, and non-voice data that legacy E911 trunks cannot carry.
Does NG911 change what a business phone system must do for 911?
The obligations are unchanged — Kari's Law and RAY BAUM'S Act still require direct 911 dialing, on-site notification, and a dispatchable location with every call. What changes is the handoff: the per-phone address a business system maintains is delivered into an IP network that can validate and route it farther than a legacy trunk could.
Is NG911 live everywhere in the US?
No — migration runs state by state and county by county as PSAPs connect to ESInets. Until the destination center is IP-enabled, a 911 call from an NG911-ready phone system may still terminate on legacy trunks, which is why providers maintain both handoff paths today.
