UI vs UX — User Interface vs User Experience

Qu'est-ce que UI vs UX?

Cette entrée n'est actuellement disponible qu'en anglais.

UI (user interface) is the layer a person sees and touches — the buttons, forms, menus, chat widgets, and screens an application presents. UX (user experience) is the broader journey — how fast the page loads, how many steps a task takes, how errors are explained, and whether the person reaches their goal without friction. UI is a component of UX: an interface can look polished while the experience around it still frustrates.

More detail

UI covers the concrete interface elements: layout, typography, color, iconography, input fields, and interactive controls. In a messaging product, the send box, contact card, and template picker are UI. UX spans everything that shapes how the task feels end to end — render time, how a failed page is explained, whether a delivery status is visible, and how the flow recovers when something goes wrong. A redesigned UI without a UX review is a common failure mode: the new screen looks better, but the same dead ends remain.

In communications products the distinction matters beyond the dashboard. The chat widget prompt and opt-in form are UI; the latency of the first reply, the phrasing of an error message, and whether a customer can resume a dropped conversation across a channel change are UX. Evaluate both: audit the interface elements directly, and measure the experience around them with completion rate, response latency, and where users abandon a flow.

Questions fréquentes

Is UI a subset of UX?
Yes — UX covers the entire interaction: load speed, flow logic, error handling, and how the product behaves across sessions and channels. The UI is the visible, touchable part of that interaction. Improving the UI alone (a visual refresh) does not fix UX problems like a slow first response, an unclear failure state, or a confirmation step buried three screens deep.
In a CPaaS or messaging product, what counts as UI and what counts as UX?
UI: the send box in a chat widget, the sender-ID selection dropdown, the campaign template editor, the phone-number search table. UX: how quickly an inbound message reaches an agent, whether a recipient can tell a message arrived, how an opt-out is honored across channels, and whether a delivery failure is explained with an actionable reason or a raw error code.
How do you measure UX separately from UI quality?
Measure the outcomes, not the pixels: task-completion rate, time-to-first-response, message delivery rate, flow abandonment points, and repeat-contact rate. UI audits (contrast labels, tap-target sizes, keyboard navigation) catch interface defects; UX measurement catches the friction between those screens, including latency and error recovery the interface never shows.
