What is Number Lookup?
A number lookup (also marketed as a live handset check) is the umbrella product term for a real-time query against a carrier's live network that confirms a phone number is currently active and reachable, before any message or call is sent to it. HLR lookup names the specific mechanism behind most of these queries; number lookup is the broader term covering that check plus whatever carrier, line-type, portability, and SIM-swap data a vendor bundles into the result.

A number lookup vendor typically returns more than a plain valid/invalid flag: current carrier and country (via MCC/MNC), line type (mobile, landline, VoIP), portability status, and increasingly a SIM-swap signal, all read from the same live subscriber record a carrier's own network consults to route a call or text.
Vendors use several names for the same live-network check: "live handset check", "HLR lookup", and "number validation" are often used interchangeably in product copy, even though HLR is technically only the GSM/UMTS-era database — LTE/5G core networks answer the equivalent query through the HSS/UDM instead.
